Preface

In these notes on the Books of the Old Testament, from JOSHUA to the SECOND BOOK OF KINGS, the primary aim has been to meet the needs of Sunday School teachers, and others who may not have access to larger commentaries. They contain, in a compendious form, the result of a considerable amount of investigation and thought.

Use has been made, in some parts freely, of the valuable notes, contributed to "The Christian," by Rev H E Brooke and Rev G Wainwright, in connection with the Daily Readings. It has not been possible to acknowledge all these references; but it would have been foolish and needless not to have made use of them, and so preserved them. But all have been carefully reconsidered and revised.

Throughout Choice Notes on Joshua to 2 Kings, the spiritual significance and personal reference have been kept well in view; and it is hoped that this volume may become the companion not only of the teacher, or of the local preacher, but of Bible readers and students generally.

To open up the Divine Word, to excite interest in it, to indicate the line of thought of the sacred writers, to induce devout meditation, and to point the spiritual lessons that are strewn throughout the pages of the Holy Scriptures has been my simple aim.
