The Call To Be A Servant

Judges 6:1-16

The first thing we see in this passage is God's Providence. He chooses who He wants for a servant, and He chooses when He will call him. He often calls people that we think are unlikely servants. Gideon was from a poor family and was the least of his household. But God is looking for servants, not stars. God saw in Gideon not what he was, but what he could be (v.12). It is not necessarily the star characteristics in your life that make you usable for God, but your servant qualities.

We also see God's presence in this passage (v.12). He promised His presence with Gideon just as He promised to be with Moses (Exod. 3:10-12, 4:10-12).

In addition, God's power is displayed in this passage. It is God's power that makes us usable, changing our focus from "What can I do for God?" to "What can God do through me?" Our own weakness is the greatest backdrop for God to display His power and glory in our lives (I Cor. 1:27).

Finally, we see from this passage that in order for God to fulfill His plan and purpose for Gideon's life (Judg. 6:14), Gideon first had to get rid of his father's idols. Faithfulness in private is the stepping stone to public ministry. Because Gideon was faithful in the private areas of his life, God saw fit to use him to effect a great deliverance for Israel. What idols must be removed before God can use you?
