About The Pastor

1 Timothy 5:17-25

Here is a great passage to help people understand the role of the "elder" or pastor in the local church. The one who is called to lead in Christ's church has a high calling indeed. This high calling comes with responsibilities and benefits.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PASTOR Vs. 17

Pastors are to "rule well" and to work hard in preaching and teaching. Please see 1 Peter 5:1-4 for further description of a pastor's responsibilities.

RESPECT FOR THE PASTOR - Vss. 17-18

The pastor who labors well is to receive double honor. This would probably include respect and financial remuneration, as indicated by verse 18.

REBUKE OF THE PASTOR - Vss. 19-21

I have been associated with fundamental churches for over 30 years and have heard many sad stories about pastors.

Many of these stories were sad because they were true.

All too often, many of these stories were sad because they were not true. Pastors are often victims of gossip and false accusation.

If a pastor is to be accused it is to be by two or three witnesses. Vs. 19

A pastor that is found guilty is to be publicly rebuked. Vs. 20

All discipline issues are to be handled impartially. Vs. 21

RESTRAINT CONCERNING NEW PASTORS Vs. 22, 24-25

Nobody should be ordained into the pastorate suddenly. The person should prove himself first.

REMINDER ABOUT THE PASTOR'S HEALTH - Vs. 22

Timothy was having problems that require he take a little wine. This was for medicinal purposes. Today the use of wine as medicine is probably not necessary. This does remind us that the pastor should take care of his health, and do what is necessary to stay in good health.
